Rachel Johnson Femme Soleil November Spotlight

Femme Soleil November Spotlight: Rachel Johnson of MHYC's Wailea

Introducing Rachel Johnson our November Femme Soleil Spotlight. As we join Rach who has recently reignited her passion for sailing to learn her way around 40.7ft Beneteau 'Wailea' from Middle Harbour Yacht Club (our, Femme Soleil's first sailing crew loyalty!)

Growing up in Tasmania, Rachel's love of the sea and sailing began right at her father's side (aged 12-15) in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. Her dad built their beloved family vessel 32ft yacht 'Alcairo' from local Huon Pine.

Her father, always the sailor and the teacher, would take charge of the sails at the bow and guide their journey while Rachel assumed the helm, learning the ropes of navigation and the art of sailing. Together, they'd navigate the picturesque D'Entrecasteaux Channel, a place steeped in sailing history. For those who might not be aware, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, is the final stretch of the iconic and legendary Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Sailing on this historic waterway is akin to walking the hallowed ground of sailing, where tales of adventure and triumph linger in the breeze.

Having since moved cities (multiple times) life, as it often does, led Rachel down different paths. She raised a family, lived life to the fullest, and faced the complexities that every journey entails. A few years ago, a new chapter in Rachel's life unfolded. After a recent divorce, she found herself with a newfound lease on life and the time to dedicate to a cherished hobby. And as any sailor knows, what may seem like a few hours on the water swiftly evolves into race preparation, crew training, and social connections that fill the calendar.

Throughout the month of November, she'll be sailing aboard Wailea, a vessel close to the heart of Femme Soleil (our first yachting loyalty), as she continues to hone her yachting skills. We're excited to shine the light on this incredible crew member and woman!

Rachel's heart found a home at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club, where she ventured into Thursday Twilights aboard the 40-foot Zen. But our paths crossed one Saturday when I saw her looking for a crew, and I couldn't resist recruiting her to join our boat. Thus began Rachel's journey with Femme Soleil.

We sailed together for months\ with Rach as Spinnaker grinder and rat (testing a number of positions this is her favourite). She has participated in numerous regattas and club events, including Pittwater Regatta, Port Stephens Regatta, multiple Short Ocean Point Score (SOPS) races, club regattas, and combined club regattas with her dream sailing goal to sail from Flores to Raja Ampat!

What's on for Rachel in November?

- MHYC Thursday Twilights (a great way to get into sailing)

- MHYC Saturday racing
